New Pictures from our Ceramics Workshop Posted!

If you missed our recent Ceramics Workshop you missed a great time! Lots of people came out to make very large coffee mugs (or repurposed the starter forms into pitchers or beer steins or kitchen utensil holders as individual preferences dictated). We had a wonderful time playing with the mud so we want to give a huge thanks to The Potter’s Guild for showing us how to do it!

We’d love to see you at our next event though so please check out our calendar for more information on our upcoming events!

A Letter from Our President

Hello,

I’d like to invite you to renew your membership in the Visual Arts Society of Jacksonville State University. If you’ve not been a member, this is the year to join!

In the last 20 years the VAS has grown to over 200 members. We could be much larger if folks in our community knew about the VAS and what it’s doing for the Art Department at JSU. We’ve raised over $100,000 for scholarships for students in the Department of Art. Currently we’re expanding the role of the VAS to meet the increasing needs of the Department to help our students in an environment of lessening state support for our university.

Monies from VAS efforts go to the Art Students Scholarship Fund, the Art Achievement Fund, the Graduate Fellowship Fund, and the Art Foundation. Our new graduate degree program has increased the need for both scholarship funding and equipment upgrade funding. The Department of Art is growing each year, and even though we have more art majors than ever, the amount of funding from the state is shrinking. It takes effort and creativity to make up the shortfall.

This year the art faculty is helping give VAS members special reasons to participate. Last November Doug Clark had a fall foliage photography workshop and this spring there will be other ‘learning events’ to enjoy. Come join other VAS members as we expand our creativity!

Next summer’s VAS Members Show at the Hammond Hall Gallery will be a fun way to share and see works created by our VAS members. It’s free to participate, and it’s quite a kick to see art that you created in a gallery setting. Start creating your work now!

Your individual membership is only $25 a year, or $40 for your family. Students are just $10. Of course, larger levels of giving are available, please contact us for details. You can also download our Membership form here. Just mail it to us with your contribution to the provided address. Your membership fees include the cost of our Annual Membership Meeting, which will be later in the semester. Details to follow.

Thanks for your support of the VAS, and we’ll see you ‘round the campus!

David Cummings, VAS President
